You know what to do
No one will tell you to do the work. It's likely that no one will even tell you to do important things.
Many will tell you to do what's safe, but it's likely you know what's right. Those might be very different.
Managers want their employees to make them less stressed out. That means doing what's expected. But being an ICP is a superpower—you're on the ground floor with the best view of how things truly are.
It's possible to get a pass for doing extraordinary things that no one expected. The best teams promote exploration and provide space for new ideas.
You might even get a pass for things that are explicitly prohibited. This one is a bit higher-risk, but outcome trumps everything.
More importantly, there is a tactful way to do what you know is right while protecting egos. You can do things your way and piss people off (it doesn't end well), or you can play the game and create a win-win scenario.
But if you're going to break the mold and take a risk, it better be fucking good.
